An outside bet in roulette is a bet placed outside the main number area of the table and covers broad groups of numbers rather than specific numbers. Outside bets have a higher probability of winning than bets on individual numbers, but also a lower payout.
What Is an Outside Bet in Roulette
An outside bet is any bet placed on the boxes located outside the main number area of the roulette board. Instead of betting on a specific number, you cover a defined group of numbers: a column, a dozen, a color, or half of the board.
Outside bets cover 12 or 18 numbers depending on the type, compared to a bet on a single number. The more numbers an outside bet covers, the higher its probability of winning and the lower its payout: these two factors balance each other out, so no roulette bet offers a better expected return than another.
No outside bet covers the zero. If zero comes up, all outside bets lose, regardless of the color, parity, or half chosen.
Types of Outside Bets in Roulette
Roulette offers six types of outside bets, grouped by how many numbers they cover:
| Outside Bet | Numbers Covered | Payout |
|---|---|---|
| Column | 12 | 2 to 1 |
| Dozen | 12 | 2 to 1 |
| Color | 18 | 1 to 1 |
| Even / Odd | 18 | 1 to 1 |
| Low / High | 18 | 1 to 1 |
Column Bet in Roulette
The column bet covers the 12 numbers of one of the three vertical columns on the roulette board and pays 2 to 1. Each column is selected from the box located at the end of the corresponding row.
Dozen Bet in Roulette
The dozen bet covers 12 consecutive numbers on the roulette board and pays 2 to 1. You can choose from three options:
- First dozen: numbers 1 to 12
- Second dozen: numbers 13 to 24
- Third dozen: numbers 25 to 36
Color Bet in Roulette
The color bet is a bet that the winning number will be red or black. It covers 18 numbers and pays 1 to 1. The zero is neither red nor black, so it is not included in this bet.
Even / Odd Bet in Roulette
The even / odd bet is a bet that the winning number will be even or odd. It covers 18 numbers and pays 1 to 1. The zero does not count as even for the purposes of this bet.
Low / High Bet in Roulette
The low / high bet divides the roulette board into two halves and pays 1 to 1. Each option covers 18 numbers:
- Low: numbers 1 to 18
- High: numbers 19 to 36
