An inside bet in roulette is a bet placed inside the number area of the table that covers specific numbers rather than broad groups. Inside bets have a lower probability of winning than outside bets, but also a higher payout.
What Is an Inside Bet in Roulette?
An inside bet is any bet placed on the numbered squares of the roulette board, either on a specific number or on the lines and intersections that separate several numbers. The exact position of the chip determines which numbers are covered.
Inside bets cover between one and six numbers, compared to 12 or 18 numbers covered by outside bets. The fewer numbers an inside bet covers, the lower its probability of winning and the higher its payout: the two factors balance each other out, so no roulette bet offers a better expected return than another.
Unlike outside bets, an inside bet can include zero, since zero is part of the number area on the board.
Types of Inside Bets in Roulette
Roulette offers five main types of inside bets, which differ by how many numbers they cover and where the chip is placed:

Straight Up Bet in Roulette
The Straight Up Bet, also called Plena, covers a single number on the roulette wheel and pays 35 to 1. It covers the fewest numbers on the board and, therefore, has the highest payout and lowest probability of winning. The chip is placed directly on the square of the chosen number.
Split or Semiplena Bet in Roulette
The Split Bet, also called Semiplena or A caballo, covers two adjacent numbers on the roulette board and pays 17 to 1. The chip is placed on the line dividing both numbers, for example between 24 and 27.
Street Bet in Roulette
The Street Bet, also called Calle, covers three consecutive numbers in a horizontal row on the roulette board and pays 11 to 1. The chip is placed at the end of the row, for example to cover 13, 14, and 15.
Corner Bet in Roulette
The Corner Bet, also called Esquina or Square, covers four numbers forming a square on the roulette board and pays 8 to 1. The chip is placed at the intersection shared by the four numbers, for example 8, 9, 11, and 12.
Six Line or Double Street Bet in Roulette
The Six Line Bet, also called Double Street or Línea, covers six numbers in two consecutive rows of the roulette board and pays 5 to 1. The chip is placed at the intersection at the end of the two rows, for example to cover from 31 to 36.
