The terms in Blackjack refer to the actions you can take during a hand (Hit, Stand, Double, Split, and Insurance) and the possible outcomes (Bust and Push). They appear at any Blackjack table, both in digital versions and in live casino tables.
Summary of Blackjack Terms
Here are the seven terms that most frequently appear at a Blackjack table:
| Term | English Name | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Hit | Hit | Request an additional card |
| Stand | Stand | Do not take more cards and keep your current score |
| Double | Double | Double your bet and receive only one card |
| Split | Split | Separate two identical cards into two hands |
| Insurance | Insurance | A side bet when the dealer shows an Ace |
| Bust | Bust | The hand exceeds 21 points |
| Push | Push | Same score as the dealer |
Hit in Blackjack
Hit means to request an additional card to bring your hand closer to 21 points. You can hit as many times as you want as long as your score does not exceed 21; if it does, you bust and immediately lose the hand.
Stand in Blackjack
Stand means not to take any more cards and to keep your current hand score. When you stand, your turn ends and the hand waits for the dealer to play their hand.
Double in Blackjack
Double means to double your initial bet in exchange for receiving only one additional card. After that card, your turn ends automatically, even if your resulting score is low.
The double option is only available at the start of the hand, before taking any cards. Some tables limit it to certain starting scores, so it's a good idea to check the Help section of the table.
Split in Blackjack
Split allows you to separate two cards of the same value into two independent hands. It requires an additional bet equal to the original bet, and the dealer deals one new card to each hand, which are then played separately.
The rules for splitting depend on the table: many variants allow splitting only once, give only one card to each split Ace, and do not consider Blackjack a 21-point hand formed after splitting, but rather a regular 21. Check the Paytable of the table to learn the applicable rules.
Insurance in Blackjack
Insurance is a side bet available only when the dealer's visible card is an Ace. It consists of betting 50% of your initial bet that the dealer has Blackjack.
If the dealer has Blackjack, the insurance pays 2 to 1, but the main bet is lost, so the net result of the hand is zero: you recover your bet with no profit. If the dealer does not have Blackjack, you lose the insurance bet and the hand continues as normal.
Bust in Blackjack
Bust means that your hand's value has exceeded 21 points. When this happens, you lose your bet immediately and the hand ends, even if the dealer has not yet played their hand.
Push in Blackjack
Push is the term for a tie between your hand and the dealer's, meaning both have the same score without busting. In a Push, your bet is returned in full, with no gain or loss.
Where to Check the Rules of Each Blackjack Table
The specific rules and payouts for each Blackjack table are found in the Paytable and the Help section within the game itself. The available variants may have different conditions than the actions described here, so it’s advisable to review them before you start playing.
